Massachusetts House Passes Two AI Election Integrity Bills 156-0 and 153-3

BOSTON — February 11, 2026 — Massachusetts House passes two AI election bills targeting deepfakes and political ad disclosures. The chamber voted 156 to 0 on February 11 to engross House Bill 5094, which mandates disclosures at the start and end of political advertisements that use AI-generated synthetic media, and then voted 153 to 3 to engross House Bill 5093, prohibiting materially deceptive AI-generated audio and visual content within 90 days of an election. Representative Daniel J. Hunt of Boston, chair of the Committee on Election Laws, called the measures "a surgical approach to ensure free and fair elections," while Minority Leader Bradley H. Jones, Jr., of North Reading backed both bills, saying "this is about accountability and transparency." The House rejected 131 to 25 an amendment by Representative Kenneth P. Sweezey of Duxbury that would have moved the state primary from September to August, and defeated 145 to 12 a separate amendment by Representative John R. Gaskey of Carver that would have narrowed the definition of materially deceptive media — with Representative Tricia Farley-Bouvier of Pittsfield arguing the bill already "talks about actual malice" and targets only material disinformation, not protected political speech.
