Massachusetts House Passes Berkeley Selectmen Bill, State Police Age Waiver in Brief Session

BOSTON — June 25, 2026 — The Massachusetts House passed two bills to engrossment and honored the Office of Inspector General in a brief informal session June 25. The House adopted a resolution by Speaker Ronald Mariano of Quincy congratulating the Inspector General's office on its 45th anniversary, suspended the rules on a voice vote at the request of Representative Joan Meschino, and then cleared Senate 2897 — authorizing the town of Berkeley to expand its board of selectmen — and House 5189, granting Bradford G. Merkel a one-time waiver of the state police examination's maximum age requirement, both by unanimous voice vote. Representatives Patrick Joseph Kearney and Kenneth P. Sweezey joined Meschino in hosting students from Marshfield Coastal Academy attending as part of the Atlantic Resilient Innovation Institute, a coastal-environment civic program launched by Jeff Canarino. The House adjourned on a motion by Representative Donald H. Wong of Saugus and will reconvene Monday, June 30, at 11 a.m.
