Massachusetts Senate passes Great River school district vote bill, multiple municipal measures

BOSTON — Massachusetts Senate clears Great River Regional School District vote bill and a slate of municipal measures in a brief August session. The chamber gave final passage to Senate bill 3181, which gives residents a vote on establishing the Great River Regional School District, sending it to the Governor after concurring in a House amendment substituting the text of House document 5658. Senator Cindy F.
Friedman secured adoption of an amendment to House bill 4575, requiring the town of Arlington to declare an overlay surplus before activating a means-tested senior citizen property tax exemption; the bill passed to be engrossed. A companion measure for Wakefield, House bill 5418, also passed to be engrossed. Two Holyoke financial modernization bills and a Westfield alcoholic beverage license conversion bill were ordered to third reading.
Minority Leader Bruce E. Tarr twice moved to suspend the rules to expedite business, and Senator John F. Keenan led the chamber in adjourning in memory of Quincy resident and U.S.
Army veteran John F. "Jack" Wilk, who died May 17 at the age of 86.
